Quantitative assessment and localization of the hollowing of the temple after craniectomy and cranioplasty–The frontozygomatic shadow

2021

Background After cranioplasty, in many cases a not negligible soft tissue defect remains in the temporozygomatical area, also referred to as a hollowing defect of the temple. Objective To assess the precise localization and volume of the hollowing defect, to optimize future cranioplasties. Methods CT data of patients who received craniectomy and conventional CAD cranioplasty in our institution between 2012 and 2018 were analyzed. CT datasets prior to craniectomy and after cranioplasty were subtracted to quantify the volume and localization of the defect. Results Out of 91 patients, 21 had suitable datasets. Five cases had good cosmetic results with no defect visible, 16 patients had an app…

Invagination of the Sphenoid Sinus Mucosa after Endoscopic Endonasal Transsphenoidal Approach and Its Significance

2016

Objective To describe the clinical features of invagination of the sphenoid sinus mucosa (ISM) and compare them with other similar cases using a visual analog scale (VAS) to assess the various nasal symptoms and to discuss its clinical significance and means of prevention. Study design Retrospective chart review at a tertiary referral center. Methods Between 2010 and 2015, 8 patients who had undergone EETSA surgery displayed postoperative ISM. The comparison group consisted of 147 patients who underwent the same surgical procedures and were diagnosed with the same diseases. Pre- or postoperative paranasal sinus computed tomography (PNS CT) and VAS were performed and subsequently analyzed. R…

Taking inspiration from nature: rules and procedures for a good building practice

2016

L’architettura clas…

The ‘false vaults’ in the architecture of Sicily

2015

Between the end of the 17th century and the first decades of the 18th, Sicily was struck by several violent earthquakes. The total and partial collapse of monumental buildings produced a global debate involving various aspects of construction practice. One of the central topics of discussion was the construction of domes and large vaulted structures. Some architects studied the possibility of using so-called ‘false vaults’, a kind of lightweight structure created with a wooden frame, reed mats, and plaster. The technique was probably known by the 16th century and was used in a few major monuments, such as the dome of the Palermo Cathedral, in the mid-17th century. It was only after the Eart…

Interventi su volte sottili di mattoni in foglio in Sicilia (Intervention on tiled vaults in Sicily)

2016

Timbrel vaults in Sicily. Constructive techniques and intervention methodologies

2017

Navigation accuracy after automatic- and hybrid-surface registration in sinus and skull base surgery.

2016

Objective Computer-aided-surgery in ENT surgery is mainly used for sinus surgery but navigation accuracy still reaches its limits for skull base procedures. Knowledge of navigation accuracy in distinct anatomical regions is therefore mandatory. This study examined whether navigation accuracy can be improved in specific anatomical localizations by using hybrid registration technique. Study design Experimental phantom study. Setting Operating room. Subjects and methods The gold standard of screw registration was compared with automatic LED-mask-registration alone, and in combination with additional surface matching. 3D-printer-based skull models with individual fabricated silicone skin were u…

Architetture lignee per lo spettacolo tra XVII e XVIII secolo a Palermo (Theatral wooden architectures in Palermo during XVIII and XIX centuries)

2016

Stone walls in Sicilian late Gothic buildings. Typological influences, constructive techniques and restorations in the twentieth century

2010

The construction of stone walls in the Sicilian Late Gothic architecture – in use for a period spanning between the 15th and 16th centuries – shows stylistic influences and constructive techniques strongly related to the relationship between the local guilds and those from other parts of the Mediterranean area. A specific Sicilian constructive tradition becomes apparent in the transitional period stretching between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, this being the result of communication between Sicilian and foreign guilds alongside cultural changes and evident stylistic analogies, with Spanish architecture in particular. The research performed has focused on the study of a large number o…

Terremoto e architettura storica. Palermo e il sisma del 1726.

2015

On September 1st 1726 Palermo was hit by a violent earthquake. Although it did not bring about the destruction of the city, the earthquake caused widespread and extensive damage to the architectural heritage. The local insti- tutions carried out a series of actions involving representatives of the technical culture. These actions affected the subsequent appearance of the urban pattern and influenced the construction methods of the time. Crossing the data taken from chronicles of the time, from maps produced after the earthquake and above all copious archival documents, the research aims to reconstruct the state in which Palermo was after that tragic event, highlighting a number of aspects. …
